Yes, copywriting courses are worth it.

Pros of Copywriting Courses for Beginners

Here are the pros to purchasing a copywriting course for beginners:

They Can Lead To Life Changing Experiences

Before I started my social media copywriting journey, I bought a social media growth course.

I started documenting everything and wrote to myself:

"I bought a small course on how to start a following. Bought it on a whim, but it's an interesting endeavor...I'm curious to where it leads."

In one year, I went from working at Domino's to making $10,000 a month from Twitter (now X) and copywriting.

While the course itself wasn’t anything special, it put me on the right path.

Had I not purchased this course, maybe I would have given up sooner and never reached my full potential.

It was the first catalyst in my journey to scaling my Ghostwriting copywriting business to $50,000 per month.

Learn From Successful Copywriters

Courses are a way for experts to productize their knowledge. When you’re a complete beginner, you don’t know what you don’t know.

You can download an expert's knowledge, experience and mistakes with a few button clicks.

This can shave off years of your learning curve because you won’t make the same mistakes and you’ll have a path laid out for you by someone who’s already accomplished what you want to accomplish.

It blows my mind how people can go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt for college but can’t pull the trigger on a $1,000 course which teaches them how to make money in the real world.

There’s Structure

When you’re a beginner copywriter, courses give you structure in a world of chaos.

You have no idea how to start.

You’re not sure what niche to pick.

You have no idea how to land your first client.

There are infinite starting points and possibilities which can overwhelm you.

Courses can show you the ropes and lay the groundwork to put you on the fast track to $10,000 per month in income.

You Can Develop a Copywriting Portfolio

At a certain point clients will ask to see your portfolio or case studies of your results.

A course can show you how to build a copywriting portfolio by turning yourself into a case study.

For example, I’m in the social media Ghostwriting niche.

I wrote Tweets for CEO’s, entrepreneurs and influencers pretending to be them and grow their accounts in exchange for money.

At the time, the proof I was competent came from growing my own social media profile on Twitter (X) to over 200,000 followers.

Personal Feedback

Sometimes a copywriting course will give you access to a community.

It could be on a platform like Discord or Skool.

The beauty of these platforms is that you can ask for personal feedback from others who are ahead of you on your journey.

You also get access to the course creator where you can ask for invaluable advice.

Surrounding yourself with like minded people who are all trying to succeed can keep you on the right track.

Cons of Copywriting Courses for Beginners

Here are some of the cons to copywriting courses:

Tutorial Hell

Copywriting courses can cause you to get stuck in tutorial hell.

Tutorial hell is when you watch hours of videos and don’t take a single action.

The harsh truth is there's someone 2x as dumb as you with 5x your money.

Your success isn’t tied to how smart you are but how much action you take.

The person who’s successful put the lessons of 1 course into action instead of buying 27 more.

At a certain point you have to face reality and realize you are mentally masturbating instead of taking action.

The same goes for reading.

The only way you're going to achieve anything in life is through real world experience.

So stop putting off what you need to be doing, take the course and then put it into action.

Within a year's time, you'll be happy you did.

Fake Gurus

When looking for a course to buy, look out for these two things:

1) Proof

2) Reviews

There are many fake gurus trying to sell you a dream or a transformation which they’ve never achieved.

If what they’re selling is too good to be true, it probably is.

Success Isn’t Guaranteed

You can watch every course on a particular subject but all you’re doing is filling gaps in your knowledge.

I like to think of it like a bridge.

For you to walk across from point A to point B, you need to fill in all the gaps in the bridge.

Each course helps you add a plank but no course is going to 100% fill all the gaps.

It’s up to you to get yourself across.

The way you do that is through experience and success is never guaranteed.

But if you don’t give up, you can never fail.

Different Skill Sets And Perspectives

At 19, I failed at eBay.

At 20, I failed at day-trading.

At 21, I failed at blogging.

At 22, I failed at Amazon FBA.

At 23, I found success as a writer.

Your path is unique and people who take the same course can have a different set of skills which can give them an unfair advantage.

Someone who’s been practicing copywriting for years has an advantage over someone who is a complete beginner like I was.

Why Would You Buy a Copywriting Course When There Is Free Information?

What you’re paying for is collated access to information.

The information is out there but it isn’t packaged into a step-by-step process.

By purchasing a course, you’re getting access to the information in the right order with a clear structure.

Accountability

Like I mentioned before, you’re less likely to quit when you’re in a community.

Some courses not only give you information but they also give you access to a community of people who can hold you accountable.

My Thoughts: Are Copywriting Courses Worth It?

Yes, copywriting courses are worth it.

In my experience, if you want to get ahead of 99% of people just pay for access and then take action.

Full disclosure: I run a Ghostwriting cohort and I’m launching a Social Media Ghostwriting course. I’ve been able to help people quit their 9-5’s and make over $10,000 per month. There’s no wild sales pitch but if you’re interested in learning how to make a living while writing Tweets in your underwear, I made a free course which you can check out here.
