Freelance Writing Niches [High Paying]

If you’re looking to make money online from freelance writing but aren’t sure which niche to choose, stick around.

5 Most Profitable Freelance Writing Niches

1. Social Media Ghostwriting

Social Media ghostwriting is where you pretend to be people on the internet and grow their brand.

CEO’s, entrepreneurs and high profile influencers don’t have time to create content on social platforms. You can jump in and be the person to write for them in exchange for money.

Ghostwriting is lucrative.

How do I know?

I own a social media Ghostwriting agency that earns $50,000 per month.

I’ve also taught others to Ghostwrite and help them quit their 9 - 5 jobs.

If you’re looking to get started with Ghostwriting, stick around until the end of this post.

I’ll show you how to get started.

2. SEO Content Writing

SEO Content Writing is where you write blog posts for companies or brands to boost their traffic with search engines like Google.

It can be more technical and creative.

You’ve got to learn about heading structures, keywords, title tags and on-page SEO optimizations.

How much can you earn as an SEO Content Writer?

According to Upwork, the average SEO writer on Upwork earns about $15 - $35 per hour.

But it depends on who you work with.

Many content writers charge per word.

In niches like business, crypto and tech I’ve seen rates .18+ per word which is about $180 per 1000 words.

3. Software as a Service (SaaS)

Software companies have fierce competition.

Therefore, they’re willing to pay top dollar for quality content.

In this freelance writing niche, they can be picky.

You’ll earn more per article but expect several rounds of revisions.

Kiera Abbamonte charges $1200 for up to 1500 words.

She also adds a 20% additional fee if it’s a Ghostwritten article.

Why?

In the B2B SaaS space, experienced writers are the ones who clean up.

If your name is plastered all over the internet with popular SaaS companies, you’ll be able to win more jobs and command hirer rates.

If I Google her name, you can see she’s worked with companies like Zapier and Databox.

4. Finance and Cryptocurrency

If you’re interested in any of these topics, this could be the niche for you:

  • Stocks
  • Bonds
  • Portfolio Theory
  • Personal Finance
  • Budgeting
  • Robo-Advisors
  • Peer-To-Peer Lending
  • Hardware Wallets
  • Software Wallets
  • Crypto Exchanges

Finance and Crypto are competitive spaces with competitive rates.

Yes, you’ll make good money but it’s not that easy.

These companies want people with credentials who can write content from experience.

If you have no experience or technical expertise in these niches, it probably isn’t smart to pursue this freelance writing niche.

But if you’re someone with experience in these niches, you can earn slightly less compared to what SaaS companies pay.

The Motley Fool pays $100 per hour to update existing articles.

For new articles, they pay around anywhere from $150 - $500 per article.

Full time you can see Coin Market Cap pays $110K per year for top shelf crypto writers.

I wasn’t able to find accurate data on Freelance Crypto writers but I can imagine the rate is compropable if not more than the motley fool when Crypto is pumping.

If you want to find the peak of what these companies are willing to pay, make a list of writers on their blog and reach out to them via email.

They’ll let you know what the ceiling looks like.

5. Health and Wellness

If you love writing about these topics, health and wellness could be the right niche for you:

  • Yoga
  • Supplements
  • Gratitude
  • Mindfulness
  • Self-care
  • Aromatherapy
  • Meditation
  • Burnout
  • Anxiety and depression

Everything I mentioned for Finance and Crypto is no different for this niche.

They want writers with experience in the niche but credentials aren’t as important as you’d think.

Healthline has freelance writers with no credentials write all their articles to save money.

Then they have health experts review the articles.

So what kind of rates can you command with companies like Healthline?

According to their latest job post, the rates start at $250 per article depending on experience.

Making Money Online Freelancing

There are many paths you can take.

But here’s the truth, you need to become a full stack creator.

Being a freelance writer can make you some quick cash but it isn’t a sustainable way of generating income long term.

You’ll always be on the hunt for your next client.

But what if the tables were turned and instead of you reaching out to get clients or applying to jobs, clients came to you.

This is the method I used to scale my Ghostwriting business to $50,000 per month.
